How long does it take for permanent nerve damage to occur?

If the pudendal nerve is entrapped in the pudendal canal, exactly how long does it take for permanent nerve damage to occur?
I don't think any doctor knows for sure, but I had pn pain for four years before my surgery, and I feel optimistic about healing. I can tell it has already healed quite a bit.
