Just started Gabapentin. Any thoughts on dosages?

My practitioner started me on 300 mg/day, which is very low. Based on what I've read online the regular neuropathy dose is more like 1800 mg/day. Anyone else here tried Neurontin? If you did, what dosages were you on?

I got up to 900 mg a day but it was giving me too many side effects and providing very little benefit. I have heard others report on the forum of getting up to 3600 mg a day but from what I understand, for pain control at least 1800 is recommended. You just don't know until you try it if it will work for you. It really helps some people.

Years ago I was on 1800 but that didn't really help. I just restarted a few months ago and at 2700 it is helping. My current doctor said that was the highest he felt he would be comfortable with me taking.
Good luck

I take 300 mg twice a day (morning and evening). I think it helps, because when I started on 300 mg 18 months ago, I noticed a slight decline in pain, so then I requested an increase to 600 mg (actually, back then it was comparable does of Gralise, extended release version of gabapentin, but now I'm on gabapentin). It's hard to know for sure if it is helping, though. Also, I'm learning about many of the problematic side effects of it on a gabapentin awareness fb group, so I am thinking about trying to go off of it soon.

April, you are probably already aware that if you go off gabapentin you need to wean off slowly.

Thank you, Violet! I did know that, but I didn't know about that article. I haven't started the reduction yet. I might wait until after surgery, and whenever I do it, I will go slow. This gabapentin awareness fb group I'm on has a weaning off plan that I might follow, but I'll look over this article too in case it has more info on that.

The site I've been reading recommends a ten percent reduction at each step down. But, what's not clear to me is how long one should be at each step (e.g., a week, two weeks). I downloaded a water titration calculator (in an Excel file) from the site, so it looks like people mix the capsules in water and reduce it that way (so it can be very gradual) since one couldn't get pills at each of these increments. If you want more information on this, send me a pm.
