Albuterol Inhaler for Rectal Spasms

Post by nyt »

Went to the Center for Bowel Dysfunction at the Cleveland Clinic. Doctor told me I had the worst rectal/levator ani spasms she had ever felt. One of the medications she started me on was the inhaler albuterol sulfate that is used for asthma. Within 2 days of one puff 3-4 times a day my butt ache I've had for 11 years is greatly improved. Didn't realize that the butt ache was mostly from my levator ani muscles, I thought it was my piriformis. Might be a medication to discuss with your doctor if your struggling with levator ani or rectal spasms. Anorectal manometry and defecometry will be completed within the next month or so.

May I ask are you using the inhaler orally or rectally. Please don't be offended. I want to give this a try. I have asthma so I have I plenty of albuterol available.

The following article explains the mechanism of action of albuterol on bronchial tissue.

https://chemm.nlm.nih.gov/countermeasure_albuterol.htm

Probably the thinking is that the medication will have the same effect on the beta2 adrenergic receptors in the rectum and relax it in a similar way as the bronchi are relaxed after using albuterol -- although it seems like inhaling it would have a more direct effect on the lungs than on the rectum.
PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Jaxi, do you mean you tried the inhaler and it didn't help or do you mean my explanation wasn't clear?
