Car Cushion
Car Cushion
What type of cushion do you use in the car? I was thinking of trying a sloped coccyx cushion with a small u-shaped cut out in the back and cutting it more to adapt to my neds, but I have a lot of sit bone pain so I don't know if this will work. I also have sacral pain, but the sloped coccyx seems to work best for that. Just wanted to get other opinions out there. Have tried the IC cushion (doesn't work for me) and a donut (but it increases my sacral pain).
-11/08 vulvodynia began around conception of first & only pregnancy
-3/10 sacral/sitting pain began after SIJD manipulation
-Progressive widespread pain- central sensitization
-PT, meds, injections, botox, ESWT = debilitated.
-5/12 Potter MRI - scarring of left ST, coccygeous & posterior alcock
-12/12 - left FAI/labral hip tear surgery
2014-2019 managed w/ gabapentin, massage, and lifestyle mod
2020 - big flare up

Re: Car Cushion
Hello,
I have the U shaped cushion, which seems to work well for me. I use it for driving and it really does not leave my car at all. I had purchased a ROHO cushion, but it was extremely bulky. But, if you left the ROHO cushion in one place, like your favorite chair or your car, it is a very well made product, but I don't think it is worth the price that they want for it.
Take care,
Wendy

That one flattened out after a year of use, so I just made myself a new one in pink, actually found hot pink duct tape in the hardware section at Target

pelvic pain started 1985 age 14 interstitial cystitis. Refused medical care from age 17, did GREAT with self care for years.
2004 PN started gradually, disabled by 2009. Underlying cause SIJD & Tarlov cysts
improved with PT & meds: neurontin, valium, nortriptyline, propanolol. (off nortriptyline & propanolol now, yay!)
Tarlov cyst surgery with Dr. Frank Feigenbaum March 20, 2012.
Results have been excellent so far; but I won't know my final functional level for a couple of years.

Re: Car Cushion
I feel like the odd man out here. I've tried all sorts of cushions and the only one that even semi helps is a nursing cusion that I sit on if out and about. I need the opening in the front, not the back. I can not stand any pressure on the front vulva/clitoris area. Has anyone found something that works in this case? The nursing pad is way to bulky for the car but works great for restaurants, etc when I only need to sit for short periods.
Have been dealing with burning pain since Jan 2010.
No sitting since April 2010.
Seen the following dr's: DO, GYN, Dermatologist, Accupuncturist,
URO GYN (his RN is the one who suggested the pain could be PN), Neurologist
Had ECG and MRI both inconclusive, only the SSEP said Pudendal reaction was abnormal and they lost that test result.
Saw Dr. Castellanos April 6, 2011. Next steps, MRI and botox. Having PT while waiting.-Botox denied, appealing to Insurance company now.

Re: Car Cushion
I use one like Hermajesty made out of pool noodles and also the "Boppy" nursing pillow. In our van, there is enough headroom for me to use the Boppy but in my car, I have to use the noodles. I used the boppy on the airplane too. So far these have worked the best for me. Hope you find a good one that works for you soon
Blessings,
Grace

Re: Car Cushion
My SIL and I spent a Sunday messing with Pool Noodles but just couldn't find a comfortable set up for me. Do they make Boppys in different densities? I got this one from a friends yard sale. Best $5 I've spent in a long time!!

Re: Car Cushion
Have you tried this cushion? - link - it is the only one that works for me in the car. Expensive but totally worth it, for me at least.
I've tried the Widgey pillow which looks to be the same as Boppy - that is good but not in the car, not sure exactly why. Anyway this Togu Airgo one works for me. One good thing about it is that it comes with a little pump thing so that you can inflate it exactly the amount that is right for you.
Actually we have now got two, my husband has back problems and it helps him as well so we have both got one now.

Re: Car Cushion
Thanks for bringing up this topic, Faith! And thank you, Calluna for the info on the Airgo. I have the most difficult time in the car. None of my various seat cushions seem to fit properly and cushions which work in the house do not seem to be as effective in a vehicle.
Ultra Sound in 03/08 showed severely retroverted, detaching uterus with mulitple fibroids and ovarian cysts.
Pressure and pain in lower abdomen and groin area was unspeakable and devastating.
Total lap hysterectomy in 06/08, but damage was already done.
EMG testing in NH in 04/10 - bilateral PN and Ilioinguals
3T MRI at HSS, NY in 09/10
Bilateral TG surgery with Dr. Conway on 03/29/11. Bilat ilioinguinal & iliohypogastric neurectomy 03/12. TCD surgery 04/14.

Re: Car Cushion
Calluna,
The cushion you purchased looks like one that I would like to buy. But how did you get it shipped to the U.S? I didn't see the U.S. listed just European countries. Please help me. Thanks.
