diagnosis of pudendal neuralgia caused by nerve entrapment

Post by Violet M »

Many of you are probably familiar with the Nantes criteria http://www.pudendalhope.info/sites/defa ... iteria.pdf
for a diagnosis of pudendal neuralgia caused by pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE). I find these articles interesting because one of the criteria for the diagnosis of PNE is that it doesn't wake you up at night. That is one of the criteria I did not meet because my symptoms did wake me up at night. They don't anymore since I had pudendal nerve release surgery but there was a time I didn't get much sleep at night. I don't know if that's because I had PGAD along with PNE but I would be interested to hear from the rest of you whether your symptoms wake you up at night.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Hello. I was diagnosed with PNE , and Yes it does wake me up at night. When my pain medication wears off I will wake up in excruciating pain. This started for me in April of 2016. I was thinking that this could be solved easily, After reading everyone's post I'm really worried. I am 51 and cant imagine living with this pain. I want it to stop now!! I'm up for one day and down for three, this is terrible. I am scheduled to have a nerve block performed by Dr. Howard Richard is this going to work has anyone had good results, Is this ailment permanent?

No, it's not necessarily permanent although depending on your history and what caused your pain to begin, you might need to be careful of your activities from now on. There was a time I didn't think I would ever get better but I'm doing great now.

From my experience in talking to people on the forum, nerve blocks do not often provide permanent relief. In the published literature the results seem better so I'm not sure why we don't hear of good results here very often. There is a slight risk of long-term worsening of symptoms although it's uncommon. I hope your nerve blocks will go well and give you some good long-term relief.

Violet thank yo very much for your help. I've had my first nerve block on August 30,2016 and it lasted until today October 21st,2016. The pain is back with a vengeance. I scheduled another nerve block for October 25th. I pray this will be the last one this is so humiliating and embarrassing . Every office I go to for treatment I have to bend over or I'm on my stomach with my pants down. I never thought I would be gong through this at age 51. I finally got the dexamethasone treatment for my back and know the nerve block has worn off for my bottom. Not to mention two colonoscopies in the last six months. Please anyone how do I stop the incontinence? Help!!!

Is it urinary or bowel incontinence? For urinary there may be drugs that can help, or you can go the route that many senior citizens go and use pads or pull-ups. I know....it is hard getting older. :(

I do understand your frustration and know exactly what you meant about the difficulty of having doctors prod and poke you in areas you would rather keep private. If it's any consolation, as someone in the medical field myself, doctors and nurses see so many patients, including without their clothes, that seeing one more half-dressed patient isn't anything unusual or something they even think about that much. They learn to compartmentalize, think of it as a job, and forget about it when they get home. So it you think of it that way, maybe it will help you to forget about it too, once your appointment is over.

Good luck with your upcoming block. ;)
