water PT harmful for PN

Post by kat »

I was to go on water PT, but due to such extensive nerve issues (pudendal and obturator decompression surgery) and such pelvic floor issues it made things much worse after only 3 (20 minute) treatments.

Water causes us to use our core muscles or pelvic floors to hold steady in water. Most of us have pelvic floor issues already so working those muscles may not be best for us as we recover.

I am just sending a warning that if you struggle with restroom issues, dilator issues and pelvic floor issues that water PT may be more than your body can handle.

Biofeedback and land work has done better for me.

Please listen to your body and do what is best for you.

That makes a lot of sense. I had a shoulder joint problem and the physical therapist started me on core strenthening exercises. Caused a MAJOR PN flare and I refused to do them anymore.

Water moving on my flesh, due to water movement or jets, was causing muscles spasms in my body due to the extreme amount of nerve damage.

I was only walking while holding onto the side wall or a noodle. Due the the hyper sensitivity of my skin from PN my muscles could not handle it and my pelvic floor is tight again and my muscles are in spasm and I'm back laying on my back waiting for the spasms to stop.

I only walked and was in a warm pool for 20 minutes 3 different days.

I want to be clear. I was doing no strengthening. I was just walking with little, slow steps but the amount of stimulation from the water made my nerves and muscles all start firing and having spasms.

If you don't have hyper sensitivity or pelvic floor issues than water may be fine for you.

I'm just warning those that are truly hyper sensitive because I don't want you hurting your body or recovery as I have.

I have never tried water PT but am guessing response would vary widely and some patients would benefit.
The reason I think this was because PT core exercise sessions used to give me tremendous temporary relief, while I have heard from a lot of PN patients who get terrible pain from the same thing. Also the other day we were discussing TENS on the board and it obviously helped some people, had no effect on some people, and for me it gave me a nasty flare. I think it depends on how your nerve is injured or entrapped. We are all very different.
But definitely if it hurts you, don't do it! I think it's a total fallacy when patients are told that if they work through the pain, the same thing that hurts them will eventually make them feel better. I agree pain is your body warning you to stop.
pelvic pain started 1985 age 14 interstitial cystitis. Refused medical care from age 17, did GREAT with self care for years.
2004 PN started gradually, disabled by 2009. Underlying cause SIJD & Tarlov cysts
improved with PT & meds: neurontin, valium, nortriptyline, propanolol. (off nortriptyline & propanolol now, yay!)
Tarlov cyst surgery with Dr. Frank Feigenbaum March 20, 2012.
Results have been excellent so far; but I won't know my final functional level for a couple of years.
