Meningitis from Nerve block injections?

Post by chemjim »

Hi everybody -

I'm going in for a nerve block with Dr. Antolak next month, and the recent news of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate with fungal contamination provided by the New England Compounding Center (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-575 ... 23-states/) got me wondering. First, has anyone out there gotten a nerve block using this stuff? Also, it appears that the cases of meningitis came from epidural administration...is this substantially different than nerve blocks we PN sufferers get?

Meningitis is still quite rare, but it certainly makes sense to confirm that stuff they are injecting is not part of the recall.

Pain was severe, but is controlled somewhat with amitriptylene and Lyrica.

HI chem jim,

I asked Hibners office in phoenix abou this recently as I have had over 5 or 6 steroid injections in the past 8 months but no one got back with me.

I can only hope theblocks are different from what was the cause of meninjitis.

did you hear anything.Igot pudendal blocks, botox, and other vaginal nerve blocks done and I hope I will be Ok. LIke I said they never called me back when I asked about it as I was very concerned too.

let me know if you find out anything.

Hi Lexie,
Sorry for the delay...I've been offline for a while. Dr. Antolak told me that the larger pain practice he's part of did use steroids from the New England Compounding Center for spinal injections, but that none of his patients had gotten any. I work in pharma manufacturing, and I can say that now that the problem's been identified, it's extremely unlikely that anyone else will get injected with the bad material.

In your situation, I'd think that they would have gotten back to you if there was anything for you to worry about.

How have your injections helped? I got one injection in each of my buttocks in the "crabs claw" area, and I'm going back for more in a couple of weeks. THey seemed to have helped some, but I'm definitely not "cured".

Trying to be hopeful,
Jim
