Flupirtine

It is my understanding that flupirtine is a drug available in some European countries.  It is a non-narcotic analgesic with a unique mechanism of action that is supposedly effective against neuropathy. (It is a potassium channel opener and NMDA receptor antagonist.)  It is not supposed to have any issues with addiction or tolerance.

Synthetic Biologics is working on bringing this drug to the US as Effirma for fibromyalgia. Relevare Pharmaceuticals in Australia is also working on flupitine formulations.  (see previous post: http://www.pudendalhope.info/forum/view ... =10#p26083)

Is there anyone familiar with this drug?  What is its downside?  Why so little fanfare when it sounds like a "Holy Grail?"
