According to this study which ended early when it was shown not to be as good and in some ways, even worse than conventional surgery.

surgical mesh is bad for pelvic floor repairs
surgical mesh is bad for pelvic floor repairs
PNE as a result of childbirth, 2002. Treatment by the Houston team, with neurosurgery by Dr. Ansell in 2004. My left side ST and SS ligaments were found to be grown together, encasing the pudendal nerve.
I am cured. I hope you will be, too.
There are no medical answers on the forum. Your only hope is to go to a doctor. I was very happy with the Houston team, which has treated the most PNE patients (well over 400), more than any other US provider.

Re: surgical mesh is bad for pelvic floor repairs
Thank you for posting this Celeste. I have heard quite a few anecdotal reports of problems with mesh used for pelvic reconstruction but have not seen any research results.

Re: surgical mesh is bad for pelvic floor repairs
And here I am with PN as a result of total pelvic reconstruction using mesh, and already, 16 months after the big surgery, I've had two more surgeries to deal with mesh extrusion.
But - I would much much rather be as I am now, with my pelvis rebuilt - and with PN - rather than have stayed as I was before the op. I knew the risks of using mesh, and I was told clearly that there was a chance of nerve damage and increased pain. I'm just grateful to the wonderful Australian surgeon who put all my insides back in the right places.

Calluna,
I did think of you when I saw Celeste's post. I think maybe in your case your prolapse was so severe that there was no choice but to use mesh for the repair. I am just so very sorry that your repair resulted in nerve damage. Do hope your recent surgery went well. Having PN is more than enough to deal with.
Best wishes,
Jeanie

Re: surgical mesh is bad for pelvic floor repairs
Hello again!
You are quite right, there was no alternative. I was initially told that surgery would not be possible - that's using conventional methods, and also using mesh. My surgery was done using some innovative techniques, by an Australian surgeon visiting the UK. Without him, I'd still be in a right mess. Dr Bruce Farnsworth, if anyone is interested. I know he's been unwell recently, I don't know if he is practising again yet.
