Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia

I had my pain doctor tell me yesterday that every 1 1/2 to 2 years a person who is taking round-the-clock opioids should go off of them completely for at least 3 months, in order to reset the person's system. This is in response to opioid-induced hyperalgesia.

How in the world does one do this?  I can't even imagine.  Now I am being pushed In that direction. I have been on opioids for 9 years now. I hate them but how do I tolerate the pain without them?

Does anyone out there understand opioid-induced hyperalgesia enough to answer a couple of questions about it?

Christopher,

Have you contacted Cora? She had to get off opiates after many years and may be able to help you.

Thank you, Lernica. I was not aware of Cora's situation.

I will contact her.

Christopher, you can read Cora's story here:

I hope they are not suggesting going off your meds cold-turkey. Cora was having good success with suboxone which helps you taper off slowly without severe withdrawal symptoms but also provides pain relief while you are tapering off.
