to those taking valium for spasms causing constipation
what dosage have you found most effective?
wondering if too much can increase constipation due to slowing digestive process
trying to figure the correct dosage for myself
thanks in advance for your feedback!

I haven't heard of valium causing constipation. Doctors routiney prescribe 10 mg three times daily. What dose are you on?

I take a little less than that, so I guess it is not making the constipation worse, dont know
I just figure since it is a muscle relaxer, it could be slowing things down
thanks for the feedback
anyone else have any experience with valium either making constipation worse or better
thanks again all

not sure if anyone else has gotten into this mode, but with all of my symptoms, mostly numbness, some perineum and tailbone pain, etc. the worst thing about the PN damage for me has been the constipation
now dealing with painful fissures, omg, what a drag..it is a daily struggle..not enough miralax, too much miralax, constant bloating, and on, total life changer for me..never comfortable
starting to forget what it was like not to have this nerve damage..it was only 6 months ago that I never gave constipation a thought..had to go, went, case closed, now obsessed with it, fffffffff, I hate it
anyone else here in this mode?

Pn person,
Many of us spend many hours thinking about/having/hoping to have, BMs. I have started calling the toilet in my house "my throne". I keep it well stocked with reading supplies and a pair of reading glasses. My family now knows that if anyone's looking for me, on my throne is where I'll be.
Just remember NOT TO PUSH or you will further compromise your nerve! Patience is a virtue in this PN-toilet business, and waiting is the name of the game.

I forgot to mention the following bathroom essentials (this may be TMI for some): a box of latex gloves for cleaning up and applying ointment; hand lotion for wiping (to minimize the friction on sensitive skin down there); a tube of custom-prepared lidocaine/gabapentin ointment to soothe burning nerve pain; and penaten ointment to relieve chapping.

ok, not alone then, lol
pushing is DEFINITELY something that makes my symptoms (numbness in my case) much worse
after even modest straining, the numbness gets way worse, and the area of numbness extends to include the lower abdomen, which is usually not too numb
I was recently was prescribed nitroglycerin ointment to help heal fissures..the nitroglycerin relaxes the muscle allowing for better blood flow, and is also a vasodilator which also aids in the healing
the colorectal surgeon who prescribed it, recommended using it prior to going, to help relieve the spasm that is causing the constipation..haven't had it long enough to determine if it allows "easier passage"...but if it works, that will be a huge help
anyone here try that yet?
have some of the essentials you spoke of, gloves ointments, etc.
not sure what to do if things get to difficult to pass without pushing, so I still feel I have to on occasion..guess I could use an enema for those instances, and probably should
have to contend with things too loose when miralax is overdone, getting it right is almost impossible
anyway, thanks for letting me know I have company in this regard..assume you hate it as much as me..such a quality of life changer
take care!

If it is too difficult to pass without pushing, try Movicol/Miralax, every day if need be - or some people report good results with magnesium - can't remember what salt it was but I am sure someone will be along soon with that information.

Miraxlax once daily should be a good balance for you. I am constipated at times as well but I don't get too focused on it. If I can't go, I can't go. People can go 5 days or so and still be OK. I"m sorry if you are feeling discomfort with this situation and hope you find a good regime.

thanks carolynm!
crazy thing..with the constant spasm at the outlet, even with the miralax on board, it is tough..hate to ignore it, cause, well, a bit graphic here, lol, but it will just stay there and get harder
hoping the nitroglycerin ointment will help, haven't had it long enough to really determine yet..colorectal surgeon says it should be at least somewhat effective, and sometimes spasms will almost completely go away for a short time
he said biofeedback studies have shown a lot of success, but added that you really have to be committed to it...definitely gonna try it if the ointment doesn't do enough..he recommended a PT who specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction that he really trusts
thanks again..your support and caring along with the others here has been sooooo helpful
take care
