How were you able to fly home after TransGluteal surgery?

Post by bartland »

For people who have traveled out-of-state or out of country to have transgluteal decompression surgery: how were you able to tolerate the flight back home?

Background for my question:
I have a consult coming up with Doctor Conway about having him do transgluteal decompression surgery in March 2025. I had this surgery 21 years ago and it was successful for many years before an accident triggered the PN pain to come back in Nov 2023. After 13 months of pelvic floor physical therapy, nerve blocks, etc I am now sadly faced with trying surgery again. I recall not being able to sit or even lay on my back side after TG surgery, that it was quite painful.

So again the queation: For people who have traveled out-of-state or out of country to have transgluteal decompression surgery: how were you able to make the flight back home without being in excruciating pain for hours?

Thanks,
Bart

Hi Bart,

It wasn't a problem for me. I had surgery with Hibner and he attached two contraptions to my gluteal during the surgery. One was designed to reduce infection, and the other had a wire that followed the path of the pudendal nerve (under the wound) that regularly dripped a numbing agent on the nerve. Hibner's office removed the first device a few days after the surgery, but they left the other device (with the numbing agent) on me. (My husband removed it at home a week or so after the surgery.) That second device combined with the (strong) pain medication made it, so I had almost no pain on the flight. I was able to get a seat in the front row of the plane---I think we requested that---so I could lean on my good side and stretch my legs out more, but I think I would have been okay without that. Do you know if Conway uses that numbing device?

I bought two seats, but should have bought 3 to completely lay down. Sitting was and is a nightmare for me.
2 failed PNE surgeries has been devastating

Hi April,

To my knowledge Doctor Hibner is the only one who uses it and sadly I cannot afford his very costly fees. Right now just his cost (not including the hospital, just surgeon's fees) is around $30,000

Thanks,
Bart

It's sad that insurance won't cover it. I didn't have the TG surgery, but I was in a ton of pain after the TIR surgery in France. I didn't have 3 seats purchased but there was 1 extra seat on the plane and some kind passengers moved so my husband and I could have that extra seat so I could lie down. I was really drugged up too.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

My God that sounds brutal. I'm so glad the extra seat was open for you and sorry you had to go through that experience.
