Sciatica pain after PN block

Post by Voorheesl »

I had a pudendal nerve block with steroid about 3 weeks ago. Starting at day three I began having sciatica down my leg. It goes from my glutes to my foot. The block only worked on one side, but took the symptoms on that side away. I've also had tailbone pain and just a weak feeling in my legs like I've run a marathon. Has anyone ever had this happen with a steroid block? How long did it take to go away if so?

Thank you!

Hi Voorheesl,

I had pain flares with my blocks but it was pn pain. I wonder if the doctor hit your sciatic nerve when they did the block. Did they use imaging so they could see where the pudendal nerve was?

Hi! Yes, he used an X-ray to do it. I'm scared bec ause it isn't going away and the doctor is not calling back. I'm thinking it just irritated the wrong nerve too. That being said, the hospital I go to is a teaching hospital and the residents to all of the procedures. So maybe it's not the most accurate.

Hi! I am so sorry you got this too!

After my PN block and a trigger point injection, I had exactly the same symptoms. On day 3, I started to feel pain in my left leg, and I still have pain (after a year) in my buttocks (which I didn’t have before), left leg, and very stiff muscles!

The first 3-4 months were a nightmare. Now I feel a little bit better. I do some stretches, but not every day, because I will have a very bad flare-up.

I would say that I regret my decision regarding that nerve block because I gained more problems than I had before!

My doctor wants to do another block, but I am scared to death!

I did all the tests after the nerve block, and all images showed nothing wrong with the nerves around. But the inflammation is triggering muscle issues, and I don’t know how long it will take to heal, unfortunately.
And I had the same issue with the hospital! I feel that when I was under the anesthesia , the med student was involved in my case.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Camelote- I just talked with Dr Hibner and he said that it likely irritated the piraformis muscle. I got some dry needling and mild stretching and it helped for several hours. He said he can botox that muscle if it won't stop spasming.
I'm definitely not doing another one!

Thank you for letting me know! I do that too plus very little massage on this area. Sometimes I feel relieved; sometimes it irritates me more. How is your sitting pain? Do you feel better? I got a call from a hospital to schedule another nerve block, and I cannot make a decision about it. I'm too scared.
How do you manage your pain?

That's a tough call about getting another one. Surely they have other options to help than the block. Perhaps talk to a new doctor who has more options to choose from. Have you done dry needling for your piriformis? A PT dug her elbow into mine the other day and I had relief for hours.
In terms of the sitting pain, I sit on soft things , get up often, and walk about 8k steps a day. It seems to help the sitting.
I hope you feel better soon!

After the nerve block, I went to see my urologist with many concerns about my pain and new symptoms, but she denied seeing me in the future. She said that she is
Off of her limits. It was very shocking for me.

I found a very good urologist, K. Peters, through this site, who has worked with PN patients for more than 20 years. His office referred me to the anesthesiologist who performs the nerve block for his patients, and I saw her for the consultation. But I am not ready to do that again.

Now I am doing soft wave therapy (4 of 6) to reduce inflammation, and I have seen small improvements. I did physical therapy for almost 3 months and still do some exercises at home.

Additionally, I do stretching therapy once every 2 weeks. It’s very helpful for perineum pain.

I found a place that offers dry needle treatment, but they recommended finishing the soft wave therapy before I start a new treatment.

I did research on PEA supplements. They help reduce inflammation and pain. I will let people know if it provides me with any relief.

I hope we will all be well soon and start to enjoy our beautiful lives again!
