Thank you for this post. There are people on this site who were not helped by Labral Tear Surgery so it is great to hear from those who have been helped. My pelvic pain specialist co-authored the study at Hospital for Special Surgery with Struan Coleman on pelvic pain and Labral Repair and she said the results were mixed. I have tears in both hips and have recently had a cortizone shot that helped alot and this is leading me to consider surgery. Thanks again for your good news.

This is exactly the reason I posted. Both I and my pelvic pain specialist were amazed at the change. But I did EVERYTHING else POSSIBLE first. Four years of going to my pelvic floor specialist. Four years of pelvic floor therapy both with the specialist and in my home town (starting 3 times per week, then 2 times per week, then once per week, and every other week for the last 1.5 years with more appointments in between for flares). Pudendal nerve blocks. Trigger point injections. About 6 years of very regular physical therapy to address all of the muscle spasms. The last year and a half have been constant (like 3 times per week with different therapists) physical therapy, both internally to the pelvic floor and head to toe with a functional orthopedics specialist, and also using folks with other training (I have about 5 PT's I use). I also saw my osteopath like every week to two weeks over the last 10 months before surgery. I also had a bunch of prolotherapy. AND I went to a paleo diet.

This may seem like a lot - hopefully I'm in the right place where everyone will go "YUP - I understand that it can really hurt that bad".

:)

That's great news amfrazi! Am well pleased to read about your results and wish you continued success!!!

It's nice to hear your results of improving multiple issues with one procedure. Your paleo diet sounds a lot like mine. I don't eat much meat, legumes or carbs, for sure the less bulk going through my system the better.

Bridget: Sorry that your hip surgery didn't yield better results, hoping things have improved, sending you my best wishes.

All good things, FG

I just had the hip injections today. The Doc says if that helps then we do an MRI to look for the hip tears. Said to give it two weeks. I was a heavy breaststroker for 20 years so maybe that hurt the hips? I already did the PN blocks, PT, acupuncture, coil embolization (to fix massive varicoceles)and a boatload of drugs. None of that helped long term. I will update result of hip injections and the next steps after two weeks.

Hi all,

After 2 1/2 years of being poked, proded, multiple drs., multiple xrays, mri's, ct scans, multiple back, si joint, hip also, trigger point, pne, and botox injections...I was told today, through a process of elimination, I may very well have a Labral tear. My neurologist wants me to get a second opinion from my pn doctor in Rochester at the end of the month. What a relief...what a blessing to have read this post when I was searching for data on the corelation among pn and hip tears. My pt kept pushing me to walk, walk, wak...I did, but then I would take pain meds and sleep half the day away. He said "get in the pool and move," so I join a seniors stretch and range of motion pool class. Result: major pain in my hip, pain around the si joint and the muscles in my legs were on fire, which cause me to recieve 3 tp injections in one hip 14 more in both legs.

Can someone tell me what the mri with the dye is like? Is the dye shot directly into the hip joint or through your arm like most dye injections are given?
Thanks to all for being here.
Kathie

Hi All,
I'm just wondering if the people on this board with labral tears were all athletes or had clear instances of injuries to their hips. My PT thinks I have an impingement, but she kind of refuses to believe I could have a tear because I have never been an athlete and I have never fallen or anything like that. I have carried extremely heavy textbooks for many years on my back and in messenger bags, but that is the only thing I could think of that could cause injury.

Is everyone with a labral tear a former athlete or someone with a clear injury?
Thanks :) Jackie

I had an injury in my right hip where I can remember my hip making a loud "crack" sound when I rode my bike. It wasn't that I did anything like fall off the bike, etc., I was riding along and my hip made a cracking sound and I then had excruciating pain that lasted a couple of hours. It took awhile for the muscles to start freaking out (like 3 months??). It took them 7 years to figure out that my labrum was torn (that was last October). Then no one could figure out the impingement.

I went to Stanford and saw my surgeon in January. He fixed my right hip in February. It was a very good thing!

My left hip was still bothering me, though. We knew it was impinged (because it had a positive impingement test). I was pretty shocked when the MRI came back with a pretty significant labrum tear.

So I guess from what I just explained, I'm convinced that the hip anatomy was bad to begin with and that is what caused my labrum to tear on each side.

Femoral acetabular impingement is like pudendal neuralgia. (Sorry - you probably didn't want to read that). There are only a few experts in the U.S. They are located at the Steadman Philippon Foundation in Vale, Colorado (Dr. Marc Philippon invented hip arthroscopy), the New York Hospital For Special Surgery (I think there are several there - Brian Kelley, Struan Coleman, and I can't remember the others), Dr. Bird in Nashville, or Dr. Safran at Stanford in California. There are other doctors who do surgery or can diagnose FAI, but if you do a search on the internet, you will quickly find a slew of people with posts like "HELP this surgery ruined my life!" So I would suggest you go to someone who has done literally hundreds of the procedures (if not thousands). So just like you're only going to get a top notch diagnosis on the location of the pudendal entrapment at a couple of places in the U.S., you're only going to find a couple of gurus for femoral acetabular impingement.

Just my two cents.

P.S. - :D Here is an awesome yahoo group for femoral acetabular impingement. There are like 4000 people on here and they can provide feedback on doctors, treatments, etc. and answer questions. I've found it very helpful. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Fe ... pingement/

Also to answer the question on what the MRI with contrast is like, the injection is into the joint (not the arm).

Thanks for all of this info :)
I know that Dr Byrd is also famed for piriformis surgery. So many things need to be ruled in or out it just gets more and more complex.
