Jane, welcome to HOPE. I am a patient of Dr. Hibner's in Phoenix, AZ. I live in Pennsylvania, though.

I am so curious as to the UK terms of doctors:

1) What is a Dr. (such as Dr. Baranowski)
2) What is a Mr. (such as Mr. Wong)
3) What is a Professor (such as Professor Carlstedt)

I guess I just don't know the difference because over here in the US, every doctor is a Dr.
Also, an M.D. is equal to a D.O. over here, except D.O.'s have additional training in Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy.

A doctor is usually a medical doctor, although people who hold doctorates in other subjects (a Ph.D in other words) are also addressed as Doctor. Someone can also be MD PhD, which means that they have a medical degree, and have also written a dissertation. A surgeon is of course also a medical doctor, but as a matter of courtesy is addressed as Mr instead of Dr. In the case of a woman who is a surgeon, she is always addressed as Miss Whatever, even if she is married.

A professor is someone who holds or has held a chair in a particular subject at a university, he may also of course be a doctor or indeed a surgeon, or not. Prof Carlstedt is so addressed because he has held an assistant professorship at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. He is also an MD PhD, as well as being a surgeon. So he could choose to be addressed as Mr Carlstedt, Dr Carlstedt, or Professor Carlstedt.

I find this hilarious! So quaint! So . . . English! Contrary to its purported intentions, I find this form of address to be less rather than more respectful of female surgeons.

Well, it is definitely English. Also Welsh, Scottish and Irish as well, though! The UK is not just England, you know.

(Edited because on re-reading what I said, I realised that it might have come across as a bit of a sense of humour failure, and I certainly didn't intend that!)

Having offended many "doctors" during my life in the Uk because I always used this term rather than Mr and having been baffled by the use of the word "consultant" for "specialist", I really appreciated the explanation!

Anyway I just wanted to alert you that Dr Bautrant is thinking about opening up a consultation and possibly doing surgery in London.
I think it would be a great idea because it would create more attention to this topic and clearly would be much more convenient for those wanting to have surgery with him. He could come once a month as Filler does (not that I would recommend him).
I said I would check for him if there is any interest.
Anyone interested?

That is great news for us in the UK, to have more choice. Does anyone know if you can have an MRN in the UK to help find the area of entrapment and then help you decide which surgery to go for?

Where in London does Dr Filler do a clinic then?

Hi Manon, I read your post with interest cos I too am under Dr B. I can't say I have ever heard of Dr Filler, where does he practise? I had two decompressions done by Professor Carlstedt, he works alongside Dr B at the London Hospital of Neurology, I am surprised you have not been referred to him. I think the more experience and knowledge we have in London the better. We appear to be dragging our heels in England compared to the States.

Kath, I am not sure what an MRN is. I have had two MRI's but as we all know they do not show up nerves.
I have read about a machine in New York that can pick up entrapments of the PN by 3 Tesla imaging and the doctor who reads the results is Dr Hollis POtter. To my knowledge there is no such machine in England unfortunately cos it would seem to be a major breakthrough for PNe sufferers.
