Hi folks
For anyone who takes rectal pain supps. does the shape/size of the suppository matter?
I feel silly asking this weird question!
I recently switched compounding pharmacies, as we found one where my Dialudid supps are several hundred hundred cheaper !, if you can believe that!
A new doc recommended another pharmacy with much better prices. Tho they are quite a bit farther away, but my hubby was eager to switch!
However their dilaudid supps are shaped differently--much shorter, and maybe a bit wider. Their helpful pharmacist assured me that it's just the way it's encased and the same amount of medicine is in there. ..which I'd assumed was the case.
My previous supps were torpedo shaped. The pointy shape helped guide them into place where they always stayed put!
This is only the 2nd time Im using it, but these shorter, thimble shaped supps actually slipped out of place as I walked to the bed to lie down ( to let it settle in). It kept sliding out- ( weird as my muscles are very tight!), Finally it settled in.
Also the new one didn't seem to help at all the first time I used it. But quite often lately times my suppsitories don't help, as I think Ive become tolerant. Ive kept going up on them; over 3 years. Ive been at this level -!2 mg Dilaudid- for some time tho.
I am waiting on my pain doc to make some major changes to my pain regimen soon. (but unfortunately not until after the new year.
This seems like a ridiculous question but does the shape matter? I would much prefer the 'torpedo" original shape as they seem to stay in place better etc. and are easy to use.
I can ask the pharmacy, whether they come pre=packed in this thimble shape, or whether they can they be made torpedo shaped.
Maybe the shape has something to do with the cost?
I doubt it -- as-we assumed the lower price has to do with the location of the pharmacy ...My first pharmacy is located in a very upscale suburb, in NJ,tho my current pharmacy is an upscale area as well but more rural and "folksy" .. so who knows?
I got the impression when I spoke to the pharmacist that she was making them up herself, so this is the way it's done.
Anyone have this experience with using various rectal supps for pain?. The only other type I've used are laxative supps and they are also more torpedo shaped; it just makes more sense anatomically. They are an over- the- counter brand name.
Weird subject but I found the first supps easier to use,
Thx in advance!
Kathy
