Side effects from Nerve Block

Post by EMLR »

I had a CT guided right Pudendal Nerve block at the Iscial Spine location performed 1 month ago. I had both lidocaine and steroids in the injection. The lidocaine took away all my pain temporarily, so I guess that is helpful diagnostic information. The lidocaine from the injection numbed my sciatic nerve (which can often happen), but now I am having problems with the sciatic nerve making my leg feel all "tinglie" and like it is falling asleep when I walk around. Before I had the injection, I could walk around without pain. Now, when I walk and move around, I can feel the length of the pudendal nerve from the sits bone area down through the inferior rectal nerve. Is this still bothering me due to inflammation/trama from the injection? I have been lying down a lot because that feels best, but when I get up and walk around, the pain comes on...will it just take more time to settle down after the nerve block? One month seems like a long time for it not to be settled down.

One other question. Does anyone notice that trying to sit on a cushion makes pain worse? It makes the peripheral nerve pain worse for me - going down the back of my leg.

Sorry to hear that you are still having some increased pain after the nerve block. It's not unusual and hopefully will be temporary for you. Typically the flareups after nerve blocks only last a few weeks but may take a bit longer to resolve for some people. Alternating heat and ice might help.

Unfortunately cushions can require some trial and error to find out which ones work for you. Actually, before my PNE surgery I can't really say any of them helped that much but I don't recall them making me worse either.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Hi EMLR

I find a cushion definitely makes my leg pain and sensations worse which is why I put off using one daily for so long. Finally, I felt protecting my tailbone was a worthwhile experiment so I've been on a cushion for about 9 months. It really does boggle the mind sometimes how all this affects us.

I also had tingling down my legs, particularly my left leg, down into the foot and toes. Interestingly I also had tingling down my arms. This was at the end of last year but once I had the 1st nerve block it seemed to clear up, however about a month or 2 ago it came back - after 6 months. Now it comes and goes, I occasionally get a buzz down my right arm but it's not so bad at the moment. Dr I was seeing said that the leg issue could be related to PN as the nerves pass quite close to each other and can "talk to each other" but he couldn't explain the arm symptoms....

I can't even get to see a GP until at least 2 weeks away. Can a UTI make PN alot worse in the long term? I know if I went to the GP they'd say that nothing will make the PN worse except falling etc but they just don't really know enough about the Pudendal nerve.
