I wanted to post my recent surgery experience. I had pudendal surgery with Dr. Ansell in May 2012. Surgery was easy to recover and I was pain free for 4 months. In those four months, I got pregnant and PNE pain came back on left side. After I had my baby, I went an saw Dr. Hibner. Oh, I had vaginal birth because I heard it could help. 8 1/2 lb baby and a 4th degree tear later. The tear healed and Pn pain still present. I finally found a combo that was letting me get back to normal after being in pain 24/7 during pregnancy. Lyrica(over 300 mg)/ nortripline/ Butran Patch. I was debating pushing surgery back, but we do want to have more kids in the future and I am not going through pregnancy with PNE and no meds. That just made me resort to ice cream every night and I packed on 60lbs. (almost all gone now!)
When I saw Dr. Hibner, it was determined that we would do a repeat surgery. I discussed the frontal approach which he learned from Dr. Aszmann. I flew down last week and had a nerve block via frontal under ultrasound. I woke up and felt less pain so I thought the frontal approach would be the way to go. Dr. Hibner warned me that this area is prone to infection and very hard to keep clean. BTW- Dr. Hibner and his team are everything that everyone says he is and more! My husband was very impressed. Thursday- Surgery day. My nerve was flat, wrapped in scar tissue. Dr. Hibner repaired and wrapped the nerve and said this was the less invasive surgery. Again, his team kept stressing the infection part.
Now, it is almost a week later and I got an infection yesterday. We flew home ( with my 6 month old) on Monday and Tuesday everything went for a turn. The infection is making the healing process 10 times harder than a 4th degree tear and the other approach. I wish so much I could turn back time and go back to the operating table and go through my butt again! My recovery before was a breese. I was up and about and feeling amazing at the 6 week mark. Now, I can barely eat because I am nauseated and the pain is horrid. I know it has only been a week, but this is by far the worst pain ever! The incision is in a hard to keep clean area and I never thought this could maybe make intercourse even harder. As if I could even want to have intercourse anytime soon!
I recovered before from the other approach and if this doesnt work and I am going through this pain for nothing PNE has already robbed me of being in pain during my engagement, wedding, TONS of $ and pregnancy. It will not get my tears anymore because this nerve is on my NERVES!!!
I do recommend Dr. Hibner and his team. I do feel that I will have good follow-up if I need it and I am just hoping these antibotics kick this to the curb.
In the past year, I feel there has been a lot more positives with PNE and a better understanding from doctors- the neourostim sounds like it is coming a long way if I ever had to resort to plan B.
For now, I will hope to get better and keep on laughing and smiling at my little boy It is amazing how your life changes and outlook when you have a child. It is truly the best!!!
I appreciate Violet and everyone that runs the forum. Its nights like this that I read positive PNE stories and HOPE that I too will get back to good again.

Hey New Mom, I love your positive attitude even you have been through so much at your young age. Your recovery after surgery with Ansell sounds easier and faster than most surgery recoveries I read about on the forum. I hope things have settled down now and the infection has cleared up -- and hope to hear some good news from you soon.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Hello New Mom,
I hope you are feeling much better. I was interested to see that Dr. Hibner has a frontal approach. Maybe especially important in surgery re-do situations if he wants to access the nerve differently than before. How is your recovery progressing now?

PN started 2004 from fall. Surgery with Filler Nov. 2006, Dr. Campbell April 2007. Pain decreased by 85% in 2008 (rectal and sitting pain resolved completely), pain returned in 12/13. Pain reduced significantly beginning around 11/23.

Re: Frontal Approach- Dr. Hibner
Hi! I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the incision for the frontal approach is, for women? Can it address all potential areas of entrapment? Thanks!
