Neurontin short term help?

Post by coach_walt »

I have had increasing sitting pain + golf ball rectum feeling from what my neuro thinks is pudendal neuralgia. My pt lady does not think it is nerve entrapment.
My issue is that I have had three distint occasions where I went a whole day without pain - to the point where I started to dream that I might actually overcome this. Of course I was back to pain as usual the next day. In EVERY one of these instances I had taken 900 mg neurontin the night before to sleep. I am not taking any medication regularly. Can neurontin have a benefit like that the day AFTER you take it?
Sitting pain started january 2013.
Urologist blood tests normal.
Neurologist diagnosed pudendal neuralgia March 2013.
Ongoing pelvic floor pt twice/wk currently.

According to this website http://www.rxlist.com/neurontin-drug/cl ... cology.htm the elimination half-life of neurontin is 5-7 hours. So there could be some left in your system the following day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_half-life It is not unusual for PN patients to have almost pain-free days on occasion but if these are consistently tied to the day after you took neurontin it's hard not to see a correlation, right?

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

Originally Gabapentin/Neurontin was developed as a muscle relaxant by a Japanese pharmaceutical firm. it is only after it was found that Neurontin was effective for epilepsy that it was acquired by Parke-Davis.
I think you are benefiting from the muscle relaxing properties of Neurontin. The analgesic action is not that quick.
2002 PN pain started following a fall on a wet marble floor
2004 Headache in the pelvis clinic. Diagnosed with PNE by Drs. Jerome Weiss, Stephen Mann, and Rodney Anderson
2004-2007 PT, Botox, diagnosed with PNE by Dr. Sheldon Jordan
2010 MRN and 3T MRI showing PNE. Diagnosed with PNE by Dr. Aaron Filler. 2 failed PNE surgeries.
2011-2012 Horrific PN pain.
2013 Experimented with various Mind-body modalities
3/2014 Significantly better
11/2014 Cured. No pain whatsoever since

Thanks for the info. It sounds reasonable that the neurontin/gabapentin may be relaxing the muscles. I will experiment with it further. This also would mean that the key to my good days is relaxing those muscles somehow.
