Hi Karyn,

I'm feeling ok. I drove for the first time today. I went to the gym to walk my mile on the treadmill. I'm getting a little faster each day. Today Dr Meyers wants me to start doing some other rehab exercises so that's on the agenda for after lunch. I still have a lot of numbness so it's really hard to gauge the pain but I still have some. It's going to take time for that tear to heal and for my pelvic floor muscles to recuperate as well.

It could take up to 3 months for rehab. My experience with Dr Meyers was great. I liked the guy a lot and so did my husband.

Hey I just wanted let everyone know that on Dr Radio on Siruis XM there is going to be a show about hernias. Here is the info they have listed under the show:

"Hernias are among the most common injuries athletes face. Our sports medicine doctors explain the signs to look for and the proper steps to take if you suspect you may be developing one."

The show airs Feb 28 at 6:00 am and 4:00 pm on Doctor Radio on Sirius XM.

Hi Griff, You recently posted....

Would you be able to tell me a little about the ultrasound equipment: sonography? colour doppler? Are these words that appear on your report etc. If not, could you name any technical info on the ultrasound that was revealed in your report etc.

Cheers ands good luck

There is really no "technical info" on the report. It states "US Extremity Lower Right Complete". My advice would be to learn the difference between a traditional hernia and a sports hernia, and find the right doctor to help because hernias are hard to diagnose through diagnostics. I was told as a result of the US that I had two traditional hernias and as it turned out I had a tear instead.

nyt just posted this link in another thread and I thought I would share it with you here. The expert they consult in this segment is the doctor that did my surgery. They mention that he uses a laproscopic approach but he does not.

Whom would one see about finding a hernia? I was told that oh no you couldn't have one because we would see it ( on the outside). I am just trying to rule this out, but GP said to go to general surgeon, and her office said oh no they don't deal with anything vaginal or internal or pelvic?? They had no answers. Reason being I had a huge fibroid left side, during pregnancy, then after the (vaginal) delivery I was left with numbness ( perineal, labia vulva) on left side for a few months, then feeling comes back and pain. Pain has become worse and more debilitating over time ( 4 years). I am starting to get really aggressive in finding out exactly what's going on and getting surgery if needed ASAP, as I cannot imagine being like this much longer, while trying to raise 2 young children! Enough already. I found myself day dreaming about running the car off the road and into something ( was by myself, of course) the other day. These thoughts are becoming more frequent and scary! So, surgery, on the flip side, is seeming more promising, less scary. Just want to be sure I have the best surgeon, and have ruled out everything (which I think I have, except hernia).

Thanks, as always.

Hi Griff522,
I'm wondering could you give us an update on your situation now. Getting close to the three month mark?

Hi aleclucy11. You can do an internet search for hernia surgeons. Enter "hernia surgeon" with the name of your city or nearest large city. They do exist. I'm just letting you know how to find a hernia surgeon should you wish to proceed down that path.

Cheers Jackson

I'm mostly recovered from my sports hernia surgery. I only get some twinges now and then in the areas if repair. I still have a bit of numbness in the area too. The sad thing for me is that I still have obturator internus spasming and pain. I'm improved activity wise compared to before I had the surgery. I do have a Labral tear in my rt hip so my surgeon really thinks that's the cause of my pain. I'm realllly concerned about having the hip scope because its not a simple surgery to recover from so I want to be as sure as possible that the hip is the cause of my OI pain.

My last MRI showed hemangiomas on my spine at L5 S1 level which is where the nerve supply is for the OI muscle. Yet my dr said nothing of it. I have an appt to talk with him tomorrow so I plan to discuss that and some questions about nerve blocks that a PM&R doctor suggested.

Hi Griff,

I guess I am a little confused about your response: I understand the hernia surgery did not solve all your pain issues, but you did say you are more active...So I am not clear, did the hernia as a cause of pelvic pain turn out to be a bust, or did having it repaired solve some of your problems? Can you list your symptoms pre-op and how, if at all, they have changed post-op? I know a number of people on the board are looking into hernia as a source of their pain at the moment, and I am having trouble discerning how much, if it all, the hernia repair helped you.

Thanks :)
pelvic pain started 1985 age 14 interstitial cystitis. Refused medical care from age 17, did GREAT with self care for years.
2004 PN started gradually, disabled by 2009. Underlying cause SIJD & Tarlov cysts
improved with PT & meds: neurontin, valium, nortriptyline, propanolol. (off nortriptyline & propanolol now, yay!)
Tarlov cyst surgery with Dr. Frank Feigenbaum March 20, 2012.
Results have been excellent so far; but I won't know my final functional level for a couple of years.

Well that's the million dollar question really. I still have a hypertonic obturator internus so it didn't help that pain. My groin pain is better so I really think the muscle tears (sports hernias) needed to be repaired. Right now Dr Meyers suspects that the hip pathology (Labral tear) is causing my pain and he wants me to see Dr Coleman. I saw a PM&R doctor here locally that specializes in pelvic pain to sort of get a second opinion. She doesn't think it's my hip causing my pain. She explained neural plasticity to me and suggested nerve blocks. So I'm trying those first before I consider hip surgery.

So to answer your question, I think the hernias were just one layer of the onion.
