Recumbent bike maybe alternative for bikers with PN

Post by KRISG »

Hi ,

I was someone that loved to ride a bike .. that is where I got my PN complaints .
I stopped completely my biking when I got my PN complaints , but I kept on missing the time outside , the workout etc.
So I tried a few other things and I discovered that I could drive a recumbent bike for hours without pain

My bike is this one ..

indeed you kind of lay down on your back while your bottom is in the air ...certainly if you are pedalling .

I would recommend if you want to try it , try it with a rented one . I spoken to a few people that where not able to bike in this way but also a few that could do it without any problem . I think it is certainly worth a trial .. For me it is the solution to be able to workout and bike without the pain

Success !!

Then pain -- but only when sitting--
took me 3 years - nerve blocks etc to find out that it really was the surface of a chair that could help.. Now . After 5 years doing well -- on a special chair - special recumbent bike- special car - but ..almost without pain !!

Thanks Kris for posting a photograph of your unique bike. Its great that you can cycle and get the workout and also without the pain in the seat regions.
Your bike looks like your butt is floating which I can imagine is perfect....!!! :) :D :D :)
PNE started 2003 following Vaginal Hysterectomy, pelvic floor repair and right oophorectomy; eventually after many tests had BilateralTG surgery Nantes 2004; following this tried many other treatments including 7 day epidural, ketamin infusions to no avail; Trialed and was implanted with a Neurostimulator in 2007- Dr Van Buyten Belgium, this has enabled me to manage my pain much better.

It's truly amazing!

Does it put pressure on your tailbone area?
PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.

No , not at all ...but you have to see to it that the seat is flat enough ..
It is even the opposite ...when you are pedalling your butt isn't on the seat ..most of the presure is on the lower back and the shoulders
But... try before you buy ...there are allot of different models on the market and they all differ very much where it comes to balance and presure

that is really cool. I see a lot of people riding those around where I live. I developed PN on a recumbent bike but it was the health club model, not nearly as reclined. I can imagine that one just might work for a lot of folks- for me, I'm gonna still stay vertical but I sure see the temptation. Have fun and put lots of silly flags on it too so I won't run ya down.

Hi Judith,

Are you from Holland then ? Because that is THE recumbent 'paradise' .

It is something worth the try . If it works ok if it doesn't then offcourse don't forse anything . If wath you do is hurting you then stop doing it . It sounds silly but lot of sporty people eventually go further with it even then.

By the way , I read onto your blog .. Nice .. Maybe we should make a possibility here as well

Hey Kris, I just saw this response so writing back a little late. No recumbent for me, and I live in the states. I'm gonna stay off my bum as much as possible, hiking satisfies me know and swimming too. I think I have a bike phobia now.
So good that it works for you though. I rode through England, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Luxemburg in the 80's on a wimpy 10 speed, no doubt that contributed to my situation today. And thanks for your thoughts on the blog. I am inviting others to make contributions. I want it to be a shared community. I'll be taking six word memoirs, and haiku entries and then posting them on Friday- guest day. So, please do some writing and submit it. Maybe after a while I'l ask for essays too.

Thanks.
Cora ;)
Onset PN/PFD/centralized pain in Oct 06 after years of athletics, nursing career and dog training. PT for two years with improvement, now go for tune-ups and pain management. Stopped Cymbalta, was on M.S. Contin, then Kadian, and briefly Methadone for pain management, now off those meds and pain is well managed with Buprenorphine. Followed my pain management specialist.
